Remote Consultations
Generally patients prefer to book face-to-face consultations for their Osteopathy or Sports Therapy appointments. However, there are some occasions where a Remote Consultation can work very well for patients who are either unable or are uncomfortable to attend a face-to-face appointment.
Though we are unable to perform hands on treatment in these sessions, there are many things we can still do such as; engage with a thorough review on the pain / injury nature, perform a range of examination movements to identify a likely diagnosis, provide advice to help the management of the pain / injury as well as explaining best course of action to commence your recovery, and can also go through any rehabilitative exercises. Patients can make use of remote consultations in a number of ways and may choose to move between remote and also face-to-face consultations as part of their overall recovery plan.
We have found them to work very well when patients have been in too much pain to make it into clinic, allowing us to get the acute pain under better management. As well as when people have wanted to review their exercise plan but may not be in the local area to do so.
How Do They Work
Our remote consultations are built in to our clinic diary software. As part of the appointment booking we will send you a confirmation email which will contain a link that will take you to our video portal. At the time of your appointment simply click the link from your chosen device and you will be connected via your web browser, so there’s no need to download any third party software. You’ll be asked to give permission to use the camera and mic and once you selected ‘yes’ you’ll be taken to a virtual waiting room. As soon as the healthcare professional is ready to start the session you will be instantly connected.
How To Prepare
Before you commence your remote consultation these steps and considerations can help make sure you get the best possible experience, and limit potential technical issues:
- Before commencing your remote consultation, consider the space you’re using during the session. Where possible try to select a room where you’re less likely to experience interruptions from noise or other people.
- If possible try to be in a space where there’s room to move about. As part of your assessment you may be asked to move the injured area. These actions wont require large amounts of space, but some freedom to move is often helpful.
- Where possible, check that your Internet connection is stable. If you often suffer connection issues, try to select a space where you’re close to the internet router. You may also find the quality of the connection is better by making sure no other devices are using the internet. Things like phones making use of YouTube or other videos, or gaming consoles performing updates, etc. can impact your connection and in some cases cause issues.
- For best results you’ll want to make use of a device that has a camera. Things like tablets, laptops and computers work best, smart phones are also usable though the screens are smaller. Where possible use a device that you can alter the camera position. You may need to adjust the camera when you move from a seated position and are asked to perform some assessment actions. You may also need to adjust the camera position if your injury is low down such as the shin, ankle or foot.
- Several minutes before your appointment is due click the link in your email confirmation or reminder to be taken to the online portal. You may be asked to allow access to the camera and microphone. Please select to allow this otherwise there may be difficulty in conducting the session.
If you have any problems or difficulties when trying to conduct a remote consultation then please contact the clinic directly and we will be more than happy to help.
