Neuro (Nerve) Mobilisation
This treatment technique can be incorporated into Osteopathy sessions and is very useful where nerve pain or nerve sensitivity is an issue. They can help people recover from a range of nerve style symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness and pins and needles.
Nerves should be able to glide freely within their tracts to accommodate movement and tension, and where patients suffer nerve symptoms this ‘glide’ can be diminished or restricted. There are many reasons why the ability of the nerve to move can become restricted, such as when under compression from a muscle or a bulging spinal disc, and when this occurs the nerve can become tensioned when it moves causing pain. Neuro Mobilisation techniques gently encourage the nerve to move more freely through a rhythmic tension and releasing style of movement. They can be applied to both the legs (as with sciatica) or the arms (for example if suffering thoracic outlet syndrome) and often are followed up with home exercises that allow the patient to develop the mobility away from the treatment sessions. As with most other treatment modalities, Neuro Mobilisations are used in combination with other treatment options and are tailored to the suitability of each individual case. This may include:
- Soft Tissue Manipulation
- Manipulative Therapy
- Rehabilitation Exercise
- Core Training
- Modern Acupuncture
- Sports Taping
- Ultrasound Therapy
