Sports Therapy

Sports therapy addresses specific sporting injuries or pain complaints with the aim of relieving pain as well as restoring movement and function via hands on treatment and rehabilitative exercise prescriptions. This is intended to get patients back to good function for their day to day activities (including their occupation) and also for their specific sport. Typically, this will also include advice on how to train for your sport around your injury to help maintain sports specific fitness, and also provide injury prevention education to help avoid repeating injuries in the future. Sport therapy and physiotherapy can often be considered as similar to one another, making it difficult for patients to differentiate one from the other. Both are highly educated in dealing with musculoskeletal problems, addressing pain and injury through hands on treatment and exercise rehabilitation. Sport therapists have a more specific knowledge when treating sports related injury and are typically considered musculoskeletal experts due to the nature of their degree training. 

Dominics approach to practice involves a detailed examination of the painful area and injury to form a likely diagnosis, then he works to educate on how to deal with the pain and start the rehabilitation journey. This typically involves a personalised exercise recovery plan that will progress in difficulty as you move through your recovery and return to your sport. Treatment can include a range of approaches such as sports massagejoint mobilisations (joint movement), sports taping, rehabilitation exercises, 1-to-1 rehabilitation support in a gym environment, and return to sport testing. Once you’re fully recovered and returned to your sport, the education and prevention approach can begin, providing you with the necessary knowledge and on going exercises to reduce the chance of recurring injury. The selection of treatment modalities used is based on the specific needs of each patient and will always be personalised. Common pain complaints addressed by sports therapists typically include joint related pain, muscular strains, ligament sprains and tendon injuries.
